Tennis News Serena Williams in danger of losing WTA Ranking
With continuous upsets, Serena Williams in danger of losing her no. 1 WTA Ranking as Angelique Kerber, Ekaterina Makarova pursues dispatching top seed.

As the US Open 2016 gets near, world no. 1 Serena Williams continuously faces issues regarding her possible downfall. Various sources mentioned the names of the tennis players who could possibly replace her on the top spot if the American no. 1 seeded upsets next week.

Among the strongest candidates slated are no. 2 seeded German Angelique Kerber, no. 30 seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova, no. 4 seeded Polish Agnieszka Radwanska, and no. 3 seeded Spanish-Venezuelan Garbine Muguruza, who created a name in Wimbledon 2016.

New York Post mentioned that there is a high probability that the top-seeded American Serena Williams will face the two-time major US Open semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova or Germany’s Angelique Kerber who is the closest candidate for the spot.

In our previous report, we wrote about Kerber’s odds to replace the 34-year-old American in her current WTA Rankings given that the German wins a Grand Slam title in the nearing US Open. With only 200-point gap, the German could easily take her spot if Williams loses another match.

However, if Williams prevents Kerber’s dispatch, she could retain her spot and extend the point gap between her and Kerber. Yet, her shoulder problem could deter it like she experienced in the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016.

Her goal of winning an Olympic medal suddenly became murky after Lucie Safavora and Barbora Strycova from the Czech Republic defeated her within the first round doubles. But other slated candidates could also be her threat as well.

Russian Makarova who’s currently in no. 8 in latest WTA Rankings, was able to defeat Williams in the 2014 US Open and 2015 Australian Open tournaments. In addition to that, French Open winner Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska are also predicted to pull Williams out from the court during the semi-finals.

In general, Williams’ next upset could lead her in danger of losing her no. 1 spot in WTA Ranking against these powerful tennis players. It’s up to her if she successfully pulls her US Open matches off or not. If not, this year could be the end of her reign.
