Sloane Stephens suffered an upset and now she’s out of the women’s division. Meanwhile, Sam Querrey advances on the men’s side of the Citi Open, Tuesday night.
American tennis player Stephens failed to advance to the next round of the City open after losing to Japan’s Risa Osaki in straight sets with a scores of, 6-2 and 6-1. Meanwhile, Sam Querrey defeated Bjorn Fratangelo in score of 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the next round of tournament.
Stephens understood that it was just one of those matches for her and took all the responsibility for her defeat. The 23-year-old American said she’d be upset for 10 minutes and then get over it.
“I just played real bad. Nothing more, nothing less,” Stephens said. “Just one of those days I was really bad. Obviously I’m not the first person to have a bad day and I won’t be the last.”
Sam Querrey fought back after losing the first set to make revenge against Fratangelo after defeating him in the French Open. Querrey was also very confident coming off a trip to the Wimbledon quarterfinals that featured a victorious win against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
“Even without the Novak win and just coming out it would’ve been tough,” Querrey said. “It was one of those matches I just had to fight my way through, and I think regardless of what happened at Wimbledon, it would’ve been tough and I did a good job of getting through it.”
The eleventh-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolo of Ukrain will be the next opponent of Querry in the next round of the Citi Open.
Earlier in the day, fifth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard was upset by Italy’s Camila Giorgi, 7-5, 6-4.
