Franz Beckenbauer is being investigated by FIFA over the decision to award Germany the 2006 World Cup. The former World Cup winning captain and coach, is one of the six officials being investigated over Germany’s 2006 World Cup award.
In 2000, Germany won the bid to host the 2006 World Cup, beating South Africa by 12 votes to 11. Beckenbauer was the head of the World Cup organizing committee and member of the FIFA executive committee at that time.
Other individuals included in the said investigation are former presidents of the DFB (German Football Association) and current members of the FIFA and UEFA executive committees, Wolfgang Niersbach, Helmut Sandrock, Theo Zwanziger, Stefan Hans and Horst Schmidt.
The international football governing body, FIFA, has opened formal proceedings against six individuals over the decision to award the 2006 World Cup to Germany. The German legend Beckenbauer has been suspected of bribery involving a “mysterious” deal with another FIFA official Jack Warner.
The launch of the massive investigation comes as FIFA new president Gianni Infantino tried to open the page on the scandal-ridden administration led by Sepp Blatter.
The German football has gained too much attention these past few months. The country’s football has been roiled by allegations and corruptions, first with the issues about the DFB which used as a slush fund to buy votes to secure vote for Germany’s 2016 World Cup bid.
The DFB case, which carried out by the law firm Freshfields, outlined a money trail linking the World Cup legend Beckenbauer, former Adidas chief Robert Louis-Dreyfus and Qatar’s Mohammed bin Hammam.
Earlier this year, Beckenbauer denied any allegations involving the 2006 World Cup in Germany and claimed that he knew nothing about of a multi-million payment involving a disgraced former FIFA official in Qatar, Mohammed bin Hamman.
Beckenbauer captained and led West Germany to victory at the 1974 World Cup. He was also the country’s team coach when Germany lifted the World Cup trophy, in Italy 16 years later. In addition to those World Cup highlights, Beckenbauer has also managed French side Marseille and German giants Bayern Munich.
