World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar Chris Jericho revealed that he almost quit the wrestling promotion on the night of winning the World Championship for the first time in his career. The 46-year-old also mentioned what made him change his mind.
17 years ago, Chris Jericho defeated Triple H in State College, PA, to win the WWE World Title for the very first time. However, Y2J’s win on the episode of RAW IS WAR wasn’t without controversy. The original referee Mike Chioda had taken a bump during the bout. Earl Hebner came in as a replacement and made the count.
Despite Hebner declaring Jericho as the winner and the new champion, Triple H, Shane McMahon and Stephanie McMahon would later protest this result. Chioda, who had finally recovered from the bump, reversed the decision. This forced Jericho to relinquish the title on the same night, as reported by Sportskeeda.
“Before I won the title that time at State College, Pennsylvania against Triple H, I was on my way to Vince’s (McMahon) office; it was like the movie Slap Shot: ‘Who owns the Chiefs? Pay me or I will leave’ sort of thing. I’m done! I lost to Viscera, I lost to the Godfather and this was a waste of my time. I’m done,” Jericho said to Siris XM’s Busted Open back in 2013.
What made Jericho change his decision?
However, Y2J later changed his decision. Tommy Blacha, who was WWE’s writer at the time explained to Jericho that he was going to win the World Title that night.
“The writer at that time was Tommy Blacha at the time and he said, ‘Listen, before you go to Vince, I have to say something.’ I said, ‘There is nothing you can say that’s going to change my mind.’ He said, ‘You’re going to win the World Title tonight.’ And that changed my mind,” Jericho added.
Jericho follows advice from the late Eddie Guerrero
The six-time world champion also revealed that the late-great Eddie Guerrero used to say – the cream will always rise to the top. If you can wrestle, you will always have a job and you will get to the top.
The 46-year-old also mentioned that if a wrestler performs to the best of his/her abilities, they will certainly get the shot at the top. This is despite the WWE having backstage politics.
It has to be noted that prior to his title win in State College, Jericho was the victim of bad booking decisions. This made his heart set on quitting the WWE before getting the World Title offer.
Chris Jericho’s first WWE World Title win was arguably one of the most memorable moments of his career despite the fact that he had to give the title back. It’s crazy to think that if WWE creative hadn’t decided to let Jericho win the belt 17 years ago, we might not even be talking and/or thinking about him at all right now.
