The WWE had an up and down year in terms of the current product. However, the company produced a number of great pay-per-views. Here is the SportsRageous’ list of the five best WWE pay-per-views of 2016.

5. Backlash

Many fans were skeptical about the first-ever PPV after the brand split. SmackDown Live does not have the star power like Raw but they managed to put on one of the best of the year. Backlash showed that great storytelling is the key to a successful pay-per-view.

Becky Lynch and the unlikely duo of Heath Slater and Rhyno became the first-ever champions of their respective divisions. It was also the start of The Miz and Dolph Ziggler’s great rivalry and A.J. Styles won the WWE World Championship from Dean Ambrose. The only dud of the PPV was Kane defeating Bray Wyatt.

4. Money in the Bank

MITB was a star-studded event headlined by A.J. Styles vs. John Cena for the first-time ever, Reigns vs. Rollins for the WWE world title and the MITB Ladder Match. The Ladder Match was one of the biggest ever with Dean Ambrose defeating Cesaro, Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens and Alberto Del Rio to claim the MITB briefcase.

Styles beat Cena, albeit controversially, but Reigns vs. Rollins had a surprising ending. Rollins pinned Reigns clean to win his second WWE world championship. However, it was short-lived as Ambrose cashed in the MITB briefcase to win his first-ever world title.

3. Royal Rumble

Despite not having any big surprise entrants this year, the Royal Rumble managed to put up a great show. Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens started the show with a bang in their hellacious Last Man Standing Match.

The three other matches before the Rumble Match were solid with The New Day and Charlotte retaining their titles while Kalisto won the United States championship. A.J. Styles made his WWE debut while Triple H shocks the world by winning the WWE world title.

2. Battleground

The only bad match on the card was The Miz vs. Darren Young but Battleground was overall a great pay-per-view. Bayley debuted with a great pop while The Wyatt Family prevailed against The New Day in an exciting match.

The night was stolen by the amazing match between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. The six-man tag team match between John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass against The Club was very solid with Cena pinning Styles. Finally, Dean Ambrose prevailed in the much-anticipated Triple Threat Match involving all the former members of The Shield.

1. Survivor Series

The best WWE pay-per-view of 2016 is Survivor Series. Nobody expected the result of the main event. The WWE shocked the world when Bill Goldberg squashed Brock Lesnar. It caused a lot buzz and Survivor Series went viral.

All the matches on the card were solid as Raw and SmackDown showcased their entire roster. The Men’s 5-on-5 Traditional Survivor Series was perfectly booked and it lasted for almost an hour. Braun Strowman looked like a star, Roman Reigns almost killed Shane McMahon and Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton showed great chemistry as they got the win for Team SmackDown.
