After rumors of a possible return to the ring for Stone Cold Steve Austin made the usual internet rounds early this month, recent reports are now indicating that the Texas Rattlesnake’s wrestling career may already be over.
And according to former WWE commentator Jim Ross, this may well be the case.
“Nope…Austin is done wrestling,” Ross shared on his website J.R.’s BBQ. “However, one never knows when he might make an appearance.”
Though his theory may be a bit hard to swallow, there is some truth in what he is saying as Austin was forced to retire in 2003 after a string of neck injuries caught up with him. Since then, he has appeared in WWE matches with only a minor role, with his last credited full match being the one against the Rock at WrestleMania 19.
At that time, Stone Cold Steve Austin even seemed to be ending his entire WWE and wrestling career altogether, saying “I think I’ve left everything I’ve got in the ring,” during his interview with the Associated Press last July. “There’s no reason to go back in the ring and prove anything. I had to ride off into the sunset a little bit earlier than I’d have liked. But that final match I had at WrestleMania with The Rock was my last match.”
Stone Cold Steve Austin at Royal Rumble?
Despite Ross’ theory and Austin’s announcement reports seemed to speculate otherwise, with the WWE reportedly, wooing both Austin and fellow WWE legend Shawn Michaels to be at next year’s Royal Rumble. Given that the event will be taking place in his own backyard (Texas), many fans are even hoping to get just an appearance from the wrestler.
Either way, fans should expect that Stone Cold Steve Austin is not at all done with his WWE and wrestling career, and will hopefully have a minor and non-physical role in future events of the wrestling company.
