Chris Jericho won the United States title from Kevin Owens at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Payback 2017. Hence, the 46-year-old will now move to the SmackDown Live roster because of the win.

WWE Rumors suggest that Jericho could drop his US title to either AJ Styles or Kevin Owens on the episode of SmackDown Live this week. This is because the WWE superstar will soon be busy with his band Fozzy. The man from Manhasset, Town of North Hempstead, New York, United States will perform for the band on the same night as Backlash pay-per-view (PPV).

AJ Style No. 1 contender for US Championship

Earlier, AJ Styles became the number one contender for the United States title and has been scheduled to get his title shot at Backlash. Also, after his loss at Payback, Kevin Owens is scheduled for a rematch for the US Championship.

It was also announced during the Monday Night Raw broadcast on May 1st that the United States Championship rematch will take place on May 2nd’s episode of SmackDown Live. Hence, it is being heavily rumored that Jericho will lose the title.

“Over the past 24 hours, there has been no indication that any of these tour dates are canceled, which suggests that Jericho will no longer be the United States Champion by the time the tour starts on Friday,” Brendan Morrow of Heavy reported.

“Kevin Owens will win the title back on SmackDown Live this week, injuring Chris Jericho in the process so that Jericho can be written off of television for some time.”

Dave Meltzer has contrasting opinion

Meanwhile, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter thinks otherwise. He believes that Jericho will be dropping his US Championship to AJ Styles in the upcoming episode of SmackDown Live.

It has already been announced on WWE.com that Chris Jericho will face AJ Styles, the number one contender, for the U.S. Championship at Backlash in May. But that doesn’t necessarily confirm that the match is happening, as the card is always subject to change.

Despite Jericho moving over to SmackDown Live, his band Fozzy still starts their tour this week. This means that he won’t be making many appearances on the blue brand. He is still very much expected to leave sometime this month.

This is the pretext in which Meltzer said that Jericho would be dropping the title on SmackDown Live and not at Backlash. What’s much more likely is that the United States Championship match at Backlash will be between Kevin Owens and AJ Styles.
