Many people were surprised when Bill Goldberg was the first superstar revealed for the WWE 2K17 video game. This led to a lot of WWE rumors regarding a return for Goldberg but the latest update suggests that it might not happen.
The WWE and 2K Sports announced last May 31 that Goldberg will be the pre-order bonus character for next year’s version of the video game. A video was released as the former WCW and WWE world champion coming out of a hatch. A Suplex City sign was also in the video which led to speculations that a Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match is going to happen.
However, Goldberg has insisted that he only signed for the video game and not as a performer. He also mentioned that the WWE has not asked him if he was interested in an in-ring return. The 49-year-old had a shaky relationship with the company but signing on to be in a video game is a good start in burying the hatchet.
“WWE has not called me to be a part of any roster. My relationship with WWE stands with the video game and the video game only. If they want to extend an olive branch and pick up the phone, then I will make a comment on that once they do it. But prior to that, nothing’s been done,” Goldberg told 411 Mania.
It should be noted that Goldberg also commented on a possible return in an interview with WWE.com, saying that he still has 50 more matches. If ever he decides to come back to WWE, which will likely happen next year, he should not be used to put over talent.
The WWE should treat him like a special attraction just like Brock Lesnar. A WrestleMania 33 match with The Beast and a Hall of Fame induction are also possible. Despite his age, Goldberg is still an athletic freak that is capable of drawing the casual fans.
