On the latest episode on SmackDown LIVE, Jinder Mahal defeated Sami Zayn, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan, Dolph Ziggler and Mojo Rawley to become the No. 1 contender for the WWE title. This has received a strong reaction from the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) universe. They were taken aback by the Indo-Canadian star getting the biggest win of his career.
There has been a huge question within the professional wrestling circle regarding the sudden push of Mahal. WWE rumors suggest that it has been done due to the company’s expansion plans in India. India is one of the biggest markets for the WWE. It has an ardent fan base ever-so-ready to consume whatever the company throws at them.
However, will Mahal become the next WWE champions? The question will be answered based on the response the Indo-Canadian star receives at home and in growth markets around the globe, as reported by cagesideseats.
Mahal’s chances of being a WWE champion
The main goal of WWE is to get a response. The wrestling promotion considers any response as a success. Hence, if Mahal is able to receive the correct heat from the crowd and his popularity grows in India, the 30-year-old has every possibility to become the next WWE champion.
Meanwhile, WWE appointed Sheetesh Srivastava as the General Manager and VP of their office in India, according to Wrestlingnews.co. Srivastava will lead WWE’s strategic business initiatives and day-to-day operations in India. He will work with partners across all of WWE’s lines of business, including television, live events, marketing, sponsorship, new media, licensing and merchandising.
WWE’s expansion plans in India
Sreevastava previously worked for Walt Disney India. He has over 18 years of experience in driving strategic business growth in domestic and international markets. He will report to Ed Wells, WWE Executive Vice President, International.
“India is key to the global growth of WWE, and we are confident Sheetesh will successfully help develop our brand and business in this critically important country. WWE is committed to expanding its presence in India. We are pleased to welcome Sheetesh to further our efforts in the market,” Wells said on Sreevastava’s appointment, as reported by Wrestlezone.
Mahal and the Bollywood Boyz debuting at SmackDown LIVE comes at a time when the WWE Shop has made itself available to the Indian shores. The WWE India shop will have Mahal and the Bollywood Boyz merchandise in the upcoming weeks. The company will be monitoring the sales the shop makes to predict on how to proceed with the superstars.
Mahal was born in Calgary, Canada and has his family based in Punjab. He is all set to face Randy Orton (that is if he wins against Bray Wyatt at Payback) for the WWE Championship at Backlash. He will be flanked by Gurv and Harv Sihra, collectively known as the Bollywood Boyz.
