World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar John Cena has been absent from programming since WrestleMania 33. The 16-time world champion proposed to longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella at the event and then took a break from professional wrestling.
The Face that Runs the Place is currently doing promotional work for his new movie The Wall, and he is also filming Daddy’s Home 2. Cena is also working on other films scheduled for release at later dates.
Cena to return of one night?
WWE will be making its way to the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona on Monday, July 3rd for RAW and Tuesday, July 4th for SmackDown Live. The wrestling promotion is advertising Cena to appear on SmackDown Live on July 4th. This is the first time the Cenation leader will appear on WWE TV since WrestleMania 33.
However, this is the only WWE show for which Cena is being advertised. But, rumors suggest that the 40-year-old will be back to break the record held by himself and the Nature Boy, Ric Flair.
John Cena made his return to SmackDown Live on December 27th, vying for his 16th world title reign. He would go on to defeat AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble to tie the legendary record held by Ric Flair.
However, the reign wouldn’t last long. Cena would lose the belt to Bray Wyatt two weeks later at Elimination Chamber. He would then go on to feud with the Miz and Maryse, tagging with his, then, girlfriend Nikki Bella against the duo at WrestleMania. He would then propose to Nikki after the bout.
How WWE could book Cena after return?
Rumors and speculation suggests that Cena will be thrown into the world title picture in some respect after his return in the summer. The WWE championship picture currently has Jinder Mahal and Orton fighting for the championship at Backlash on May 21. Hence, it could be possible that Orton may be without a title soon.
There has been no official news on whether Cena’s return would be for one night only or if it’s for longer. However, one could assume that he will be sticking around for a few months.
The additions of Shinsuke Nakamura, Jinder Mahal, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have made WWE’s blue brand an attractive place. Hence, Cena will have a lot more competition this time around.
There are so many paths Cena can take upon his return. Hence, it’s possible that SmackDown will be quite different from when he left.
