A.J. Styles has only been with the WWE for less than four months, but he’s already challenging for the WWE World Heavyweight championship. According to the latest WWE rumors, Vince McMahon is reportedly high on “The Phenomenal One.”
Eric Arrington of Daily Wrestling News reports that top WWE officials are supporting Styles’ current push. One of the major reasons is the high sales of his merchandise since his arrival in January with the WWE seeing him as a very marketable superstar.
As for his in-ring work, McMahon is also said to be very impressed despite the WWE chairman being known for his love of big and heavily muscled guys. Styles had quality matches in his feud with Chris Jericho and his match against Sami Zayn on the latest episode of Monday Night Raw may be a Match of the Year candidate.
On the other hand, WWE rumors persist on the Bullet Club helping Styles in the near future. Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows made their debuts on Raw this week by attacking The Usos.
This may be a tease by the WWE that Anderson and Gallows will help Styles win the WWE championship against Roman Reigns. The Usos are Reigns’ cousins while Styles was the former leader of the Bullet Club back in Japan.
The 38-year-old wrestler has come a long way from his days in TNA and NJPW. In a recent interview with Sam Roberts’ Wrestling Podcast Styles revealed he was willing to change his name to sign with the WWE and prove that he’s a team player.
“’Oh, he’s BJ Smiles!’, like I’m a wrestler from Fire Pro Wrestling.’ I literally was like, ‘you know what, man? I’ll do whatever you guys want to do.’ Sure, I’d like to keep my name, but who wouldn’t? But that’s not going to stop me from going to the WWE. I want to do what’s best for my family and my career, so if it works out, it works out [and] if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,’” Styles said via Wrestling Inc.
