WrestleMania 33 is still about seven months away but the WWE is already planning on what to do with John Cena. According to the latest WWE rumors, there are two possible matches for Cena at the Grandest Stage of Them All next year.
The 15-time WWE World Champion is currently looking to tie Ric Flair’s record for most world title wins but he is not expected to come out victorious at No Mercy on October 9. Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats reported that the WWE have two options for Cena at WrestleMania 33.
The first option is John Cena vs. The Undertaker, a dream match for many fans. According to The Inquisitr, this was originally planned for WrestleMania 32. However, Cena injured his shoulder and The Undertaker went on to face Shane McMahon in a Hell in a Cell Match.
Ortman noted that this match can only happen if The Undertaker gives it a go. Rumors backstage suggest that The Deadman is officially retired from wrestling. Nevertheless, the WWE still has seven months to change his mind.
On the other hand, the second option is for John Cena to tie Ric Flair’s record of being a 16-time WWE World Champion. The 39-year-old will face Dean Ambrose and current champ A.J. Styles at No Mercy but do not expect him to win.
Cena will miss the rest of the year after No Mercy to film the second season of American Grit. The perfect return for him will be at the Royal Rumble and win the match. He can then challenge Styles, who might still be the champion by then, at WrestleMania 33.
It should be noted that these are just rumors at the moment and take it with a grain of salt. However, the WWE is looking to sell out WrestleMania 33 so they are going to pull out all the stops to make it happen.
