Cody Rhodes was released from his WWE contract on Sunday after requesting it and the two sides seem to be in good terms. However, the latest WWE rumors suggest that the company was unhappy with his request and Rhodes may still be under contract despite the release announcement.
The son of the late Dusty Rhodes shock many wrestling fans when he asked for his release this weekend, citing frustrations with his character and the WWE creative team. The company announced his release on Sunday before the Extreme Rules pay-per-view in Newark, New Jersey.
Cody was asking creative, as well as Vince McMahon and Triple H, to have him drop his Stardust gimmick and return to being Cody Rhodes again. The plan was for him to become Cody again after WrestleMania 32 but it was ultimately scrapped.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer noted that it was Mr. McMahon’s idea to not go with the plan. He also mentioned that despite being released from his contract, the WWE is reportedly trying to tie him to the deal so that he can’t wrestle for other promotions.
“Vince McMahon and Triple H – and it was more Vince McMahon on this one, from what I was told, they decided (that) we’re not going to do it,” Meltzer said via Wrestling Inc.
According to Cageside Seats, there is still no confirmation when Rhodes’ contract will expire. However, he can always hire a lawyer who can get him out his deal by arguing that the WWE announced his release publicly.
