The WWE was filled with a lot of great and shocking moments this year. There were some disappointing results but it was a very entertaining year in wrestling. Here is SportsRageous’ top ten shocking moments of 2016 featuring Shane McMahon and A.J. Styles.
10. Finn Balor wins the WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam
In his main roster pay-per-view debut, Finn Balor became the first-ever WWE Universal Champion. It was a shocking result since he was up against the red-hot Seth Rollins. Unfortunately, Balor had to relinquish the title the next night on Raw due to a shoulder injury.
9. The Miz goes off on Daniel Bryan on Talking Smack
2016 has been the year of The Miz since he established the Intercontinental title and delivered some of the best promos in the last decade. One of them was his golden promo against Daniel Bryan. Kayfabe is alive, ladies and gentlemen.
8. T.J. Perkins wins the Cruiserweight Classic
The first-ever Cruiserweight Classic was very successful for the WWE as it gave birth to the division on the main roster. Zack Sabre Jr. and Kota Ibushi were the favorites to win the tournament. However, it was T.J. Perkins who went on to win the Cruiserweight Classic and become the first WWE cruiserweight champion. *wink*
7. Roman Reigns gets suspended for violating the WWE Wellness Policy
The WWE pushed Roman Reigns down everyone’s throats until the Money in the Bank pay-per-view in July. He lost the WWE World Title that night and it was revealed the next day that he failed a WWE Wellness Policy test. He was suspended for 30 days and he was demoted to the midcard.
6. Zack Ryder wins the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 32
Even though Zack Ryder ended up dropping the IC title the next night on Raw to The Miz, no one predicted that Ryder will win at WrestleMania 32. It was a surreal moment because it was his first-ever match at the main WrestleMania show and he ended up winning the coveted IC championship.
5. Dean Ambrose wins the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank
“The Lunatic Fringe” won the Money in the Bank briefcase right in his hometown of Las Vegas. One hour later, Ambrose cashed in on Seth Rollins, who just defeated Roman Reigns for the WWE World Championship. It was a glorious night as all three members of The Shield held the WWE title on the same day.
4. Daniel Bryan announces his retirement on February 8
Fans were caught off guard on February 8 when Daniel Bryan announced that he was retiring. Many hoped that he will pull off a Mark Henry but it was legitimate. The career of the most beloved superstar of the past decade ended due to multiple concussions.
3. A.J. Styles makes his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble
This moment could have been high on the list if it was not all over the internet. Nevertheless, it was still great to see A.J. Styles make his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble. Even though he started off slow, he ended his rookie year as the WWE World champion (if he retains next week on SmackDown Live).
2. Shane McMahon returns to Raw on February 8
When John Cena was ruled out of WrestleMania 32, The Undertaker has no opponent for the event. However, Shane McMahon was there to save the day as he returned to the WWE after seven long years. It was certainly a shocking moment because the dirt sheets were not able to know about it.
1. Bill Goldberg squashes Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series
Arguably the most shocking moment of the year, Goldberg destroyed Lesnar at Survivor Series. No one predicted the outcome of it since many were expecting “The Beast” to win. Nevertheless, the WWE created the buzz they wanted, as well as the most shocking moment of 2016.
